Street Resurfacing Program

TaylorThe Department of Public Works (DPW) maintains 12,458 blocks of streets in San Francisco. Determining which streets will be repaved every year is a key responsibility of DPW. DPW engineers provide a  score for each street, based upon the roadway condition and its traffic load. Based on these compiled scores along with other factors, such as street classification, transit and bicycle routes, utility clearances and available budget, DPW develops a priority list of streets to be resurfaced.

DPW's Bureau of Street & Sewer Repair paves many of San Francisco's neighborhood streets, with the remainder paved by private contractors, whose work is overseen by DPW. A typical city block is repaved within a few days. After repaving, the Department of Parking and Traffic re-stripes the roadway.

Another one of DPW's key roles in the street resurfacing program is to notify utility companies of upcoming repaving work so that all work can be coordinated. In an effort to keep new street surfaces from being disturbed, a five-year  moratorium is placed on newly paved roads. Although departments and utility companies are allowed to work under the roadway for emergency situations, overall the  moratorium rule helps to minimize the disturbance of newly paved roads.

Federal Economic Stimulus Paving Projects

DPW applied and successfully received approval for over $11 million in stimulus funding to implement five resurfacing projects under the Federal Economic Stimulus Package. In June, DPW received notice that it may also be eligible to receive an additional $2.2 million to fund two projects. For more information about the upcoming street resurfacing projects, refer to the 2009 Economic Stimulus Paving Projects.
