San Francisco Public Works Announces New Deputy Director and City Engineer

SAN FRANCISCO, CA –The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today the appointment of Fuad Sweiss to lead the department's five Engineering bureaus, overseeing the architectural, engineering, construction, project management, and street use and mapping sections.

Mr. Sweiss was appointed Deputy Director for Engineering and brings with him 27 years of engineering and construction experience in the public and private sectors. He will also serve as San Francisco's City Engineer.

"Fuad brings a great deal of public works experience to our leadership team and will play a critical role in improving capital project delivery, paving and street construction, and the City's contracting environment," said Ed Reiskin, Public Works Director.

Mr. Sweiss spent 18 years serving Oakland's Public Works Agency leading many engineering functions including engineering design, construction, and right-of-way management. He was also instrumental in developing and putting to use Oakland's GIS system.

I am eager to bring my skills and passion to this great city, and work closely with city and private agencies to design and build superior, world-class projects, Mr. Sweiss said.

For the last two years, Mr. Sweiss worked as the founder and president of his own design and construction firm in Oakland, where he oversaw environmentally friendly residential and commercial development projects and participated in numerous activities promoting Integrated Project Delivery alternatives. Prior to his work in Oakland, Mr. Sweiss held various engineering positions for an international consulting company in Jordan. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Jordan and is licensed by the State of California as a Professional Civil Engineer, a Professional Land Surveyor, and a Class A General Engineering Contractor.

The San Francisco Department of Public Works is responsible for the care and maintenance of San Francisco's streets and much of its infrastructure. The department designs, builds, and cleans city streets, plants and maintains city street trees and medians; designs, constructs and maintains city-owned facilities, conducts sidewalk and roadway inspections, constructs curb ramps, provides mechanical and manual street cleaning, removes graffiti from public property, and partners with the diverse neighborhoods in San Francisco to provide stellar cleaning and greening services.
